{"id":2494,"date":"2021-08-09T12:41:42","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T10:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/?p=2494"},"modified":"2021-08-09T13:40:09","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T11:40:09","slug":"domaines-francois-lurton-in-the-land-of-moliere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/en\/domaines-francois-lurton-in-the-land-of-moliere\/","title":{"rendered":"Domaines Fran\u00e7ois Lurton in the land of Moli\u00e8re"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Touching on&nbsp;<span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">P\u00e9zenas<\/span>&nbsp;in our Wine Stories is an obvious choice: in this corner of Languedoc around 15 kilometres from the Mediterranean,&nbsp;history&nbsp;and wine chime in harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This town was home to one of the greatest French families of the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century (the Montmorencys), but locals seem to prefer remembering Moli\u00e8re, who spent eleven years living there after his initial failure in Paris. They proudly proclaim that \u2018Jean-Baptiste Poquelin was born in Paris in 1622, but Moli\u00e8re was born in P\u00e9zenas in 1650\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town attracts curious tourists and history fans, but also a large number of inveterate wine enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because first and foremost, P\u00e9zenas is a terroir! One of the richest and most beautiful in France. Here, following impressive massifs that gushed molten lava and glaciers that shaped the topography during the climate oscillations of the Quaternary period, there remains a visible basalt flow from Lod\u00e8ve to Agde, terraces of worn pebbles on the right bank of the H\u00e9rault, ancient shale uncovered by relief inversion as a result of erosion, and alluvial deposits of various origins that have accumulated at the bottom of slopes or at the end of nappes over millions of years. This terroir is a truly multifaceted gem for exacting winemakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1137\" width=\"343\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.domainesfrancoislurton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DDN-Vineyard-Autumn-4-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In this rich and rare winemaking soil just a (volcanic or Kimmeridgean) stone\u2019s throw from P\u00e9zenas, 38 hectares of vines are planted for\u00a0Domaine de Nizas, an iconic estate that we have just leased in the appellation. These 38 hectares will be joined by another 14 that we plan to plant over the next three years (4 hectares from February 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Nizas, <span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Syrah<\/span>&nbsp;reigns supreme. When you see how this grape variety expresses itself in the granite of the Rhone Valley, you gain a better understanding of why it occupies nearly all of the estate\u2019s&nbsp;<span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">volcanic soils.<\/span> The resulting wines are well-structured yet airy. Beautiful tannic structure supports aromas of flowers (violet) and fruit (blackcurrant, wild blackberry), with spicy touches (liquorice and black pepper) emerging early in the maturation process. When made as a ros\u00e9, it offers elegant and refreshing citrus notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Carignan<\/span>&nbsp;generally has a low pH and consistent acidity, ensuring freshness. Depending on the vintage and maturation period, it can offer meaty or even gamy notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the other end of the scale,&nbsp;<span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Grenache Noir&nbsp;<\/span>is not very acidic. It benefits from being planted in meagre soils with strong&nbsp;<span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Kimmeridgian<\/span> characteristics. Long, gradual maturation enables it to offer up rich, full juices that add power and generosity to the blend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally,&nbsp;<span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Mourv\u00e8dre<\/span>&nbsp;is a fickle star. It has to be pruned short because it just grows and grows, but produces few leaves and lots of small, underripe grapes. Limiting its growth whilst preserving its foliage is a constant headache for Occitan winemakers. At Nizas it can be found in&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">clay soils<\/span><\/strong> that are deep and cool, which suit it particularly well. In top years, it combines the benefits of Syrah and Grenache Noir, with huge finesse and various spice notes. And 2018 is a great vintage for Mourv\u00e8dre, both red and ros\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color:#b38b14\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Roussanne,&nbsp;Rolle&nbsp;and&nbsp;Viognier<\/span>&nbsp;make up the remainder of the estate\u2019s white PDO grapes, offering powerful wines with good ageing potential.
